Adelaide is a city in southern Australia, the capital and main city of the state of South Australia. Situated on the Torrens River near the Gulf Saint Vincent, Adelaide is a modern city of wide streets, imposing squares, and many parks. Industrial activity includes electronic and motor-vehicle equipment, machinery, chemicals, textiles, and plastic goods. Port Adelaide provides shipping facilities nearby.
Points of interest in Adelaide include the Adelaide Festival Centre, this being the site of a biennial arts festival, the Botanic Gardens, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery of South Australia. The cathedrals of Saint Peter and Saint Francis Xavier serve the community. The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia are also located here.
